Identification Documents for Travelers, Relatives and Friends in the Philippines

by: Charlene Bolanos

Here are some important details which expatriates, balikbayans and travelers should keep in mind in so far as handling documents and submitting them for a vacation place to stay or temporary housing:

1) Make sure you have a photocopy of your documents which temporary housing, vacation place or front desk officers at inns and hotels asks you to submit, show them the original copy of your passport. I remember when I went to Singapore, we were asked to show our passports  before eventually given our keys. This will insure your safety in the Philippines. This holds true if you are checking in with a companion or with guests.

Do not make it hard for owners and front desk officers if they asked you of your identification and companions. They hold the right to accept you or not.

Otherwise, I know some establishments may not be requiring you to submit your identification cards, but they have hidden cctv's inside your rooms. Even if you are enjoying with your family, I think I still prefer privacy while eating dinner and discussing family matters.

2) Be courteous in dealing with  staff, security guards and the people around you. If it is your first time in the Philippines, act appropriately. Listen carefully because most times they are trying to say something important and you are not listening, you may get into trouble. Be smart.

3) Always be at your smart casual best. This will command respect. Filipinos are usually hospitable and greet you in the streets, so best to listen carefully.

4)  It is always good to talk about things which displeases you right on, but be courteous at all times. This will alert managers and owners and think on how to take care of you. Most times managers, staff and owners of temporary housing places would want you to feel at home and enjoy your stay in the Philippines. They can't do this without any feed back from you..

5) Clear all guidelines - make sure you have a Philippines sim card in your cellular phones, in case of advisory and notices which the front desk officer may need to relay to you. We have  GLOBE, SUN and SMART sim cards which is affordable. This will facilitate  your stay in the Philippines.
