How to Host a Christmas Family Party in the Philippines

by: JC Bulan

The host sets the tone for a Christmas party in Novaliches, Quezon City.  He needs to be well-prepared for this joyous occasion.  These are the most important things to consider when planning the program: the number and personalities of the attendees, special presentations, games, and the exchange gift portion.

It would be nice to have 2 or 3 persons to host the party.  Their lively exchange can pump up the crowd.  If there will be two hosts, one should be male and one female.  If three people will host, there should be 2 males and 1 female or vice-versa.

The hosts need to have an ammunition of jokes, segues, and anecdotes.  These will keep the party going in case of unforeseen events.  Keeping the audience engaged is a critical factor in hosting parties.

The program always starts with a prayer and an inspiring message from the eldest in the clan.  Happy people would be more cooperative so better feed them first.  Presentations and games may begin soon after.

Every year, the family gets bigger so there’s a chance that not everyone knows each other.  The hosts should include an icebreaker to help the relatives rediscover each other.

If a host does not know the guests well, he should go around before the party and have short chats with the attendees, especially the heads of the families.  He could use the information he got during his spiels to make the party more meaningful with a personal touch.

Programs should include a number of common games.  The hosts should also introduce some new games to add novelty to the party.  Filipinos love to showcase their singing and dancing talents during parties so better have a videoke and a good sound system ready.

Kids and adults alike love to bring home gifts.  The hosts need to ask around beforehand to get sponsors.  The exchange gift portion can take place at the last part of the program.
Do you think you’re ready to host?  Don’t forget to take care of your voice!  Limit cold and sweet food to avoid getting sick just before Christmas day.
