Potlucks are central to Filipino Christmas parties. This is the time when families showcase their specialties. This event is also a good way to express the Christmas spirit.
When people talk about Christmas spirit, the words joy, charity, generosity, kindness, and forgiveness come into mind. For this article, we will only focus on two: joy and charity. Let’s start with the virtue of joy.
During Christmas, people want everybody to be happy. Thus for a potluck, the food must be delicious. These should be served with smiles on their faces.
Each family must take great care in preparing the food. This includes the quality of the ingredients, taste, and the final presentation.
The decoration on the table must also be important. It should give a greater shine to the hard work put in by those who cooked the various dishes. It would be lovely to play Christmas songs or other lively songs in the background.
The value of charity also comes into play during the Christmas party potluck. Some families might not be as well-off as their other relatives. The food that so the food they share might not measure up to their standards.
Still, there should be understanding and appreciation on the others’ part. The guests are not just there to eat. They should also take advantage of this occasion to reach out, ask how their relatives are, and see if they can extend some help.
There would be a lot of leftovers behind so the well-off families should give a bigger share to their needy relatives. If everyone is well-to-do, then there must be a willingness to share the extra food to the poor people in the streets.
Most importantly, Filipinos should arrive right on time so that people would not be kept waiting. Charity is also respecting other people’s time.
Having the Christmas spirit in the hearts of the guests brighten up the occasion. The whole-hearted sharing of oneself becomes present that day and carries on even after everyone returns to their daily grind. The spirit of thanksgiving will grow stronger and bear fruit in people’s deeds.
