Rain or Shine, family bonding in the Philippines

Filipinos normally brace for typhoons in June, July, and August. It takes smart planning to have a great family bonding vacation in the Philippines set in these months.

Being family means making sure nobody feels left out. There are many places to visit and things to do in the Philippines given your family size, age group, health, and temperament.

If you are from an adventurous type of family whose members are all grown-up and are without health issues to consider, then you may surf all you can through the playful waters of Siargao, Baler, or La Union notwithstanding a bad weather. Why not go kayaking, snorkeling, or water rafting in Palawan? However, if you are traveling as an extended family with lolos, lolas, titos, titas, and kids who may not be into such escapades, then you may eye places which can accommodate your family’s varying tastes and needs instead.

Or, unless weather agencies issue public warnings that restrict you from going out in extreme weather conditions, why not try activities which may be done together as a family, rain or shine

Relearn history as you visit museums, old churches, and ancestral houses such as those in Manila and Ilocos, particularly in Vigan, Laoag, and Paoay. You may pass by Pagudpud as well to check out its rock formations and waterfalls.

Compliment your sightseeing with food tripping. Binondo and Intramuros, aside from being historical sites, are also home to different kinds of cuisines, some exotic.

Experience the religious and cultural value of fiestas in the Philippines. In June, go mud-slinging during the Mudpack Festival held in Negros Occidental as you experience Mambukal Resort where you can picnic, have massage, observe bats and butterflies, and try sulfur springs. In August, experience the merrymaking, street dancing, fireworks display, and fruit and floral shows during the Kadayawan Festival in Davao.

Try hot bath in a big vat (kawa) in Tibiao, Antique. Then get tickled by hundreds of little fish in Tibiao’s fish spas. You can even go fishing as one big family team using a giant net called lambaklad.

Go shopping at high-end shopping malls or even at bazaars and flea markets. Why not host a wise buyer’s shopping challenge to find out who the most frugal and practical member of the family is in buying stuff that you or others need, and not simply want?

Why not, as a family, include volunteering for a cause as part of your plan—a vacation with a mission? Coordinate with local government units and legitimate civic organizations to check voluntourism projects which allow you to travel, learn, help out, and have fun as you form mindsets early in exposing the young ones to opportunities such as voluntourism for youth, showing them that the world is a bigger place where each little deed counts to making it better.

Relationships cannot simply be strengthened through expensive touring, but are improved through traveling as a family to distant places while dreaming for, aiming at, and working for meaningful ends.
