What to wear on November, December, January till February

by: Mrs. Aileen B. Soriano

When visiting the Philippines starting November till February,
here are some tips on what clothes to bring:

Formal Attire:

The safest to wear a formal attire in my country is when
the occasion or the invitation calls for a formal outfit.
If it is not written in the invitation, you may ask your host.

1. Bring at least one or two formal attire for a special
family occassion.

2. Philippines formal attire are typically Barong Tagalog
for the gentlemen. The Barong Tagalog is made of "jusi"
and available in different colors. The Barong Tagalog
fits any nationality.

Wearing an "Americana" is acceptable ... but honestly it
can be uncomfortable especially if the air conditioning fails...
it happened that a German gentleman fainted because he was
wearing an Americana and there were many people
who attended the occasion; and the airconditioning failed...
that is why I always advised a Barong Tagalog for
formal occasions, whether it be wedding or whatever
formal gatherings...

The Barong Tagalog is a clothing specifically made for
tropical weather, that makes you comfortable and cool.

The the terno for the ladies is a Filipiniana gown that
comes in different colors and design.

Bonus tip: Always wear the color that matches your
skin. A Filipiniana gown is always worn with
dignity and never showing intimate parts, otherwise
it is not a "Filipiniana gown".

Semi-Formal Attire

A Semi formal attire is worn during Baptisms,
Confirmation or business meetings in the Philippines.

Formal attire in business meetings are worn when
the invitation specifically calls for it.

A semi-formal attire for men are usually
pants (not maong), long sleeves with or without
tie.  Black pants, brown and gray are the safest
color for a semi - formal attire.

Men who dress powerfully asserts their
position as leaders, and gives the impression of
credibility.

The ladies wear blouse and skirt with blazer.
Slacks are seldom use, but if you are an architect or
engineer you are excused. The skirt is a status quo
symbol for the ladies, that  as women leaders assert
their femininity which is affective and effective in
many professional negotiations.

Wear stockings, best  color is  nude or black.

The Philippines is known for its being matriarchal,
being a woman in the Philippines is an asset.

Shoes: The safest is always a shined leather shoes in
good condition.

Tip: Never bring your wool clothes in the Philippines, unless
you will be staying in a 24/7 fully air conditioned house.

Smart Casual

1. Jeans and Tee-Shirts
2. Walking Shorts and Tee- Shirts (never use short shorts, my country
is tropical and thus we also have the finest collections of insects.)
3. Flip-flops, my favorite is the Islander brand.
Great for walking in the beach or anywhere.
Just make sure your nails are clean or manicured.
4. Rubber Shoes with cotton socks.

Swim Suit

The Philippines is a beach country. So do not
miss the waters. Just watch out for jelly fish, but
starting November they are all far away. Make sure you
ask the local beach watcher.

1. Always bring a one piece swim suit for the
ladies. This will make you swim comfortably
without too much worries for coral scratches or
insect bites.

2. A one piece swim suit is also advisable for
the gentlemen.

#1 and #2 is also applicable for children

Accessories:

You may opt to bring your accessories or
just buy in the malls.

The Philippines is known for its colorful
accessories, not to mention the best designed
pearls.

Toiletries

1. Toothbrush with toothpaste.
2. Baby powder
3. Cologne
4. Deodorant
5. Face towel
6. Tissue Paper
7. Sanitizer
8. Vitamins and Minerals; virgin coconut oil

*Virgin Coconut Oil will help you boost your
immune system and will protect your skin from
the sun. Take 2T once a day.

9. List of your medicines always.
10. Intimate toiletries for men and women.
11. Umbrella for men and women.

The Philippines is a tropical country, so its good to
look and smell fresh all the time.

Tip: Daily bath is a "MUST" in the Philippines,
otherwise you will be feasted on by insects (strange
but true) and avoided by many people.

Avoid eating too much spicy food, because the
weather is tropical it reacts with the skin and
may create a deadly body odour.

Always bring a baby powder, a towel, cologne,
mouthwash or toothbrush with toothpaste
drinking water...and your camera!
