Philippines Fiesta

by: F.C. Irorita

All throughout the year, there are festivals being celebrated in all corners of the Philippines. This July, there are a lot of fiestas that you could attend to. Do not worry about lodging, because there are always a lot of places to stay in the Philippines. My suggestion is always to have a place to stay in Manila or near your relatives like renting a furnished apartment.

Let’s start with the Pagoda Festival that is celebrated every first Sunday of July. A Holy Cross of Wawa is paraded in a pagoda in a river procession in the Bocaue River in Bulacan. All the boats and as well as the pagoda carrying the Holy Cross are beautifully and grandiosely decorated, making a very beautiful sight.
Up next is the Sublian Festival in Batangas. Children dance the subli to pay homage to Sto. NiƱo and to the Holy Cross of Bauan and Agoncillo. The festival, which is celebrated every year on July 23, also serves as a foundation day celebration of the City of Batangas.

Pilgrims of Our Lady of Visitation, meanwhile, goes all the way to Guibang, Isabela, for the annual Feast of Our Lady of Guibang. It is celebrated every July 1 and 2 and is always preceded by a nine-day novena mass starting on June 23. You could get to Isabela by bus, just be prepared for a very long ride.

Going farther north in Cagayan, you could attend the annual Feast of Our Lady of Piat on July 1 and 2. Also known as the Sambali Festival, the feast celebrates one of the most venerated Marian images of Mary, which was originally called Our Lady of Rosaries by the Dominicans who brought the image to Cagayan in the 16th century. Thousands of devotees visit her image annually, making the town of Piat the “Pilgrimage Center of Cagayan Valley”.

Going south to Visayas, you could try attending the Banig Festival in Cebu City. Celebrated every July 5 of the year, the celebration revolves around banig, a handwoven mat, which is the primary produce of Badian, Cebu, where the Banig Festival is held. The streets become filled with people wearing clothes made of banig and also song and dance competitions all throughout the day.
Wherever you go in the Philippines, there will always be a festival for you to enjoy. There will always be food, drinks, events, activities and temporary housing waiting for you whenever you visit.
