How to Go for a Marian Pilgrimage in Manila..
by: F.C. Irorita
This July, why don’t you start a Marian pilgrimage in Manila? It’s always a great time to experience the affection of Mother Mary, and there are always places to stay in the Philippines for you. It is easy to find temporary housing or finding a transient house for vacation here, so it’s convenient to focus on partaking in the pilgrimage.
You could start your journey with the oldest recognized Marian shrine in Manila, the Ermita Church in Antonia Flores Street, dedicated to Our Lady of Guidance. To get there, you could walk from SM North EDSA to the nearby North Avenue Station, and take a train until you reach Taft terminal station. You’ll switch lines here and ride the LRT-1 line and get off at United Nations Avenue station, where you could take a jeepney to Ermita Church.
Malate Church, dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies, is your next destination, and can be reached by riding the same LRT-1 line until you reach Libertad station. You’ll have to ride the jeepneys here that have the sign “PIER”, and tell the driver to drop at San Andres Street. From there, you could either walk or ride a jeep that is bound for Roxas Boulevard, and then get off at Del Pilar Street where Malate Church is located.
Continuing along Roxas Boulevard, you could also reach the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help by riding a jeepney to Baclaran. It is also known as the Baclaran Church and is frequented by devotees every Wednesday, so be prepared to ride a wave of throngs of people. It would be great if you could catch the sun set, as the Baclaran Church faces Manila Bay.
Next would be the Our Lady of Loreto Church in Sampaloc. From SM North EDSA, walk again to the nearby North Avenue Station, and then take a train to Cubao station. You will switch lines again and ride the LRT-2 line to Legarda station, where the Loreto Church is just a walk away.
There is also a church you could visit around Quezon City called the Santo Domingo Church.
To get to Santo Domingo Church, you could ride a jeepney or take the MRT line to Quezon Avenue. Jeepneys passing traveling to Quiapo can drop you off right in front of Santo Domingo Church. This Church is home to Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as the Virgin of La Naval.
These churches are the nearest Marian Churches you could visit while staying in Manila, but if you have the time you could also go as far as Pasig and Antipolo for other Marian Churches. I hope this helps youS in your Marian Pilgrimage!
