How to Adjust in the Philippine Weather

by: F. C. Irorita

Under the tropical weather,  invest in turning on the air-conditioner in your room . All the electric fans will surely be directed at you, and yet you perspire a lot and feel so hot. In the Philippines it is okay to take a shower three times a day.

So you ask me, what else can I do to keep yourself cool in the Philippines? Fortunately for you, my friend, you asked the right person. Here is how you could cool yourself while you are enjoying your vacation in the Philippines.

Let’s start first with the hard stuff. To keep everything in high efficiency and in good order, you will have to clean up everything in the house. The dust that accumulates in the house blocks the airways, making the house hot. You might think that cleaning the house would just make you feel even hotter because of the work you’re doing, but once the house is clean you will feel a lot cooler because of the freer airway.
Another thing that you can do is to clean up the filters of your air-conditioning system and to remove all the dust in your electric fans. This will make them more efficient in cooling the air around the house.
You should also turn off appliances that you are not  using as these heat up, and also turn lights off that aren’t being used because they also emit heat.

Do not hesitate to open the doors and windows so that the hot air would be able to come out and the cool breeze to come in.

Wearing light clothing is also advisable, and loose fabric is ideal for letting the air pass through to your skin. If you need to go out, you could wear a cap or bring an umbrella to block the sun. Don’t forget to wear sunblock to protect your skin from the sun if you’re wearing sleeveless clothing.

Sometimes it’s even more advisable to wear long sleeves if you will have to stay under the sun for a long time to protect your skin, but you could always just wear loose-fitting ones so that the air could still pass through.

Wearing cotton long sleeves is the best option. The best cotton sleeves that are good also for the Philippine weather are those cotton clothes made from India, Indonesia and Malaysia. The local Philippine cotton from Zamboanga, and those white kamiso de tsino which we Filipinos typically wear is also good.  If you are attending a formal wear occasion, best is the Barong Tagalog, and you can get it in different colors.

I could also not stress enough that it is important to keep yourself hydrated. Drink water every time you feel thirsty to cool you off. Refrain from drinking hot drinks and eating hot food. You could try eating ice cream, popsicles, slurpees or cola floats. Cold soup noodles can also be a good meal.  Ice Cream Coconut Cakes, cold leche flan and halo-halo are also good food to keep cool in the tropical weather in the Philippines.

Always have a cool head! Having a hot temper actually makes your body temperature increase, and it makes it hard for your body to cool down. So while you’re here enjoying your vacation in the Philippines, the best thing to do is this: chill.
