10 TIPS SWIMMING IN THE PHILIPPINES

by: F.C. Irorita

1. Be sure that you have a place to stay near the place where you’d like to swim. There are a lot of places to stay in the Philippines, and if you’re looking for a vacation apartment or temporary housing, it won’t be too hard to find. This is important just in case of emergencies.

2. If you’re a beginner, always stay close near the coast or the edges of the body of water. If you stray too far, you might go into deeper waters and get caught up in the tide of the water. You wouldn’t want that to happen to you.

3. Wear goggles so that the water would not get into your eyes. Sometimes, saltwater or even freshwater could have a lot of dirt in them and also bacteria, so wearing goggles are not only for allowing you to see underwater, it’s also for your protection.

4. Also, never drink the water you are swimming in. Aside from tasting bad, the water usually is very dirty and has a lot of bacteria regardless of how clear it seems to be. Be safe and avoid getting sick over this.

Do not drink alcohol get drunk then swim in the beach, this is dangerous.

5. Always have someone who knows CPR with you, just in case someone drowns.

6. Bring life jackets and life buoys for small children. You could also bring floating Styrofoam boards, but they are less reliable.

7. Never swim alone! Most cases of people getting lost while swimming occurs when they swim alone. At least always swim with a buddy or a partner, or better yet, always stick together when swimming as a group, making it easy for you to respond to others who are in need of help.

8. Never playfully fool others about drowning or push others to dangerous parts of the water without their consent. Doing so could lead to drowning or death, and you don’t want that to happen to anyone.

9. Be careful of fish and sea creatures that might release toxins when you touch them. Do research first about the body of water you’re going to swim in before going there on site. Sometimes there would be jellyfish in the area and they might be hard to spot, so be aware.

10. Finally, stay hydrated. Being in water might make you feel very thirsty or fool you into thinking that you still have a lot of water in your body because the water you’re swimming in is cooling you. Whatever is the case, drink lots of water before and after swimming.
Have a happy and safe swim!
