June, July and August Vacation in the Philippines

by: K. Chan

Quezon City is known throughout the Philippines for having great schools, a thriving business center, and housing one of the strongholds of the national government, Batasang Pambansa. Most people are unaware though, of the rich culture that thrives within Quezon City. This June to August vacation, expose yourself to different forms of art in Quezon City! There are various offerings in those months, and the events listed below are but a tasty sample.

The first event occurring in Quezon City this June to August is the Hillsong United concert! They will perform live in the Smart Araneta Coliseum on June 13.  Hillsong United is a popular Christian worship band hailing from Sydney, Australia. The band originated from the Hillsong church, but have grown to tour internationally. Their latest single,  Oceans (Where My Feet May Fail),  was number one on the American Billboard Christian Songs chart. Tickets range from P300 for general admission to P1500 for patron seats.

Another show also pays tribute to a legendary figure – Aegis, a Pinoy rock band whose lead singles include Luha, Halik, and Basang basa sa ulan. The Philippine Educational Theater Association or PETA is holding a musical entitled Rak of Aegis at The PETA Theater Center from June 20 to August 31. Through the songs of Aegis, PETA will tell a love story set in a flooded subdivision. The musical’s overall theme is the resilience of the Filipino. Tickets range from P800 for balcony seats to P1200 for VIP seats.

For those who want to see a play, yet yearn for something familiar in a foreign vacation place, watch Dulaang UP’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure! Dulaang UP will have two versions of the play, one in English, and one in Filipino entitled Hakbang sa Hakbang.  The plays will be held in the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, UP Diliman starting August 20. No prices have been announced yet but Dulaang UP’s tickets are usually around P300 for non-UP students, while UP students avail of a discount and get a ticket for around P160.

Finally, on August 23, 2014 the Philippines will celebrate the anniversary of the cry of Pugad Lawin.  The Cry of Pugad Lawin is considered the official start of the Philippine revolution against the Spaniards. The Katipuneros, the biggest revolutionary party, tore up their cedulas or tax certificates at Pugad Lawin, protesting against the unfair treatment of Spaniards to Filipinos and demanding Philippine independence. A shrine in Barangay Bahay Toro commemorates this key event in Philippine national history.

Without that particular event, the Philippines may have developed in a different way. In that alternate Philippines, this lovely city, Quezon City may not be the same as it is today. You, the tourist looking for a fun and fulfilling vacation, will certainly not experience worshipping God through music, rocking out to a love story, watch William Shakespeare’s plays in the Philippines or salute the heroes who have helped make the Philippines a beautiful place.
