How to Prepare a Church Wedding in the Philippines
by: Kira Chan
Church wedding is actually a lady's dream, because of the abundance of grace and blessings when you are married at Church for your family and children.
When you plan your Church wedding, you need preparation not only financially, emotionally, physically, socially but also spiritually.
The best is to attend a retreat in preparation for this big event. It is best to have your spouse attend one too. You may also attend courses like "Before I do" and later on... "After I do" seminars.
Then the next big phase of a "Catholic Wedding" is the leg work:
Here are the steps:
1.) Visit the Parish Church or Church you want your wedding to be officiated.
2.) Block of a date for your wedding.
3.) You may already hire a choir, photo shoot, make-up artist, interior decorator of your Church Wedding. The people in the Parish Church facilitate all the arrangement and thus all you need to do is reserve and pay the group you want to hire.
Submit the following documents:
If you are a Catholic and your future spouse is a Catholic:
1) Certificate of completion of the Marriage preparation courses.
2) Certificate of Baptism and Confirmation
3) Affidavit of freedom to marry, and a civil marriage license.
4) Please confirm with your parish priest if there are any additional documents needed.
5) Annulment papers if you or your spouse’ first marriage has been annulled.
If your Future Spouse is not a Catholic:
1.) First, the significant other’s religious leader must submit a letter stating that your fiancĂ©e is unmarried. A form called the Disparitas Cultas, allowing the mixed marriage to take place may also be needed.
2.) Certificate of Baptism if he is a Christian.
Next step is - the Parish Priest will guide you in preparation for the “wedding” day. Typically it’s a fun seminar for the future couple. There are seminars offered at the Ateneo de Manila University and you may also attend in your local Parish Church.
Your marriage is invalid if you or your boyfriend are officially married to another, that goes to legally separated but not annulled.
The religious leader of your spouse may also be present at the Catholic wedding, but since it’s a Catholic wedding, the minister is the Parish Priest.
After the Church Wedding has been settled, you will need to plan for your reception and invitation, honeymoon, share of responsibilities and back to reality situation...your plans for the future.
Honeymoon is typically the time where you need to plan with your spouse the future that lays ahead...how many children, how do we raise funds, where do we send them to school, how to take care of each other when the other gets sick...share in household chores, budget, business, your weekly night out alone with your spouse which is very important etc...
Good luck for those who are planning to get married this year...Best Wishes!
